Today, Mohab (name changed) is pursuing the third year of a Polytechnic Diploma in Electronics and Communication Engineering. He was also selected for the Young Tinker Fellowship, an online STEM programme, where he is building skills in coding, 3D printing, and innovation.
But not long ago, that future seemed uncertain.
When Mohab was a young child, his father passed away due to an HIV-related illness. His mother, who was also living with HIV, struggled to provide for Mohab and his younger sister. With no family support and the burden of stigma, she could no longer meet her children’s needs or continue Mohab’s education. A social worker referred the case to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), and in January 2015, the Committee facilitated his admission to a Child Care Institution (CCI) in Telangana.
Although the CCI ensured Mohab’s safety, education, and care, it could never replace the love and belonging of a family. Over the years, the CCI team and Miracle Foundation India worked together to prepare Mohab and his mother for a safe and sustainable reunion.
When the time came, Mohab’s mother was hesitant. Years of living with HIV, financial hardship, and stigma had left her uncertain about her ability to care for her children. Through regular counselling, home visits, and sustained emotional support, she gradually regained confidence. The team also worked with the family and community to build a supportive environment for their return. Mohab’s mother was enrolled in the Aasara Widow Pension Scheme which, together with her income from domestic work, strengthened the family’s financial stability. The family also received educational assistance and support for essential needs, helping them establish a stable home environment. With this support in place, and following approval from the CWC, Mohab was successfully reintegrated with his family in August 2024.
Today, Mohab is thriving, and the family is rebuilding their lives together. Between 2021 and 2026, their overall well-being improved significantly, with stronger family relationships, better educational outcomes, improved living conditions, and greater household stability. The team continues to provide follow-up support, counselling, and guidance while ensuring the family remains connected to community resources and social protection services. This ongoing support is helping the family sustain long-term stability, enabling both children to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment.
Mohab’s story highlights that reintegration is a gradual process built on trust, preparation, and partnership with families. While every child’s journey into family separation is different, our commitment remains the same: every child deserves to grow up in a safe and loving family. Through counselling, social protection, and community support, Mohab’s mother regained the stability to care for her children, transforming what began as uncertainty into a renewed future for the entire family.
